Christine Arnold, Humane Society executive director, said the latest incident was of a 3-year old golden retriever mix left in a hot car that died. The dog had been left in a car with almost no shade from approximately 10 a.m. to noon.
When the owner returned to the car the dog was dead.
The case has been referred to the district attorney's office and they will decide whether to prosecute this case as a felony or misdemeanor. Persons convicted of felony animal cruelty face up to three years in prison.
The dog was found with its head underneath the pedals of the car, it appeared the dog was seeking any kind of shade it could find. It was 96 degrees that day and the temperature in the car easily topped 110 degrees.
When the Humane Society veterinarians took the dog's temperature four hours after it had died. It was 107.8 degrees. The body temperature of a healthy canine is 100.3 to 102.5 degrees.
Christine Arnold, Humane Society executive director, said "People often don't realize how hot it can get inside a car on a hot day. Within about five minutes the temperature can rise 15 to 20 degrees." References- SanJose Mercury News - June 4, 2000
