A Guilford man whose abuse of a dog was videotaped by a neighbor will spend five days in jail. Justin McIver, 28, pleaded guilty to cruelty to animals in Piscataquis County Superior Court. He also was fined $500 and ordered to make restitution of $408 and a $10-per-day jail boarding fee.
"We think it was a fair resolution," McIver's attorney, Donald Brown of Bangor, told Justice Jeffrey Hjelm in court.
Police reports filed in the case said a neighbor's videotape captured McIver tormenting his girlfriend's dog for several minutes. The tape reportedly showed McIver leaving a house he shared with his girlfriend and walking over to a boxer-mix dog. Police said McIver is seen grabbing the cable the dog was tied to and pulling the dog around. It also showed McIver stepping on the cable to force the dog to the ground and stepping close to the dog's throat causing it breathing problems, according to their report. The report also said that when the dog was lying on its back with its legs in the air, McIver twisted its legs and later struck the dog on the head twice with a metal dish.
McIver told police that the dog had bitten him on the arm when he first went outside the day the abuse was taped, although the alleged bite did not require medical treatment. When shown the video, McIver's girlfriend gave the animal to police. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian for treatment but later was euthanized because of its temperament.
