Newton Chung, 35, of Short Hills was issued a misdemeanor summons for cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug 9 for leaving his 130-pound Rottweiler in his car for over 3 hours while he shopped with his family at Clinton Crossing Outlet Center.
The dog had been left drinking water and the car's windows opened half an inch. The combination of intense sunshine and high temperatures gave the vehicle an oven-like temperature.
Officer Donna Cavanaugh said, "When I got out of the car (after inspecting the interior), my pen blew up."
Cavanaugh said, "He was distraught (about the dog's death). He said that it never crossed his mind that it could get that hot in the car and never checked on the dog."
Chung was very upset about the loss of his dog and understood the need for the summons.
Dr Kenton Moore, Clinton Veterinary Hospital, said death "more than likely" was caused by heat exhaustion. Moore said he has measured summer temperatures in his own car of 120-130 degrees. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
