Dog's head covered with plastic bag, stomped on
Garner, NC (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Sep 29, 2001
County: Wake

Disposition: Alleged
Case Images: 1 files available

Alleged: Brett Merrick

A Garner dog, which was allegedly abused by its owner, continues to improve under the care of the Wake County SPCA. Sydney, 2, suffered fractures to her jawbone. She was infested with fleas and had stomach parasites.

Two-year-old Sydney, a Rottweiler-Beagle mix, suffered two fractures to her jawbone. Her owner, Brett Merrick, was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty on Saturday. He was later released on bond.

Police say that neighbors saw Merrick cover the dog's head with a plastic bag and then jump up and down on her.

The fractures were not Sydney's only problem. The dog was covered with fleas and had a stomach full of parasites.

A bottle cap that was in the dog's stomach has been removed, but the SPCA is contemplating whether it should wire Sydney's jaw shut because of the complicated breaks in the dog's jaw.

Sydney is being given pain killers and has been treated for the fleas, according to Mondy Lamb of the Wake County SPCA.
