When Julie Lindemann checked the Care and Share donation box on January 29, 2006, she was horrified. A small puppy lay still in a basket with donations to the charitable organization. "We were afraid someone dumped a dead animal in there," Lindemann said. But when she gently poked the little dog, it woke. Seconds later, the puppy perked up and began playing with one of the stuffed animals someone left in the box for Care and Share. Although Lindemann was definitely relieved the female dog, a mix of possibly a blue tick hound and a Labrador retriever, appeared to be fine, she was still appalled.

"She was hungry and very thirsty," said Lindemann, a Gypsum resident whose mother runs Care and Share in Gypsum. "We think she had been in there all night. I hate to think someone just tossed her in there like garbage." Lindemann, who breeds Newfoundland dogs, took the black, white and orange puppy and found her a home with a local high-school teacher. If it weren't for Lindemann, that puppy might not have survived.

Care and Share, an agency that takes household items and clothing and re-distributes them to needy people in the area, is closed in the winter. Luckily, Lindemann makes a habit of checking the donation box almost everyday. Otherwise, the three corn dogs and blanket left with the puppy wouldn't have been enough to keep it alive for very long. "It's sad to me that someone would drop a live animal -- to me they're like babies," Lindemann said. "She's gorgeous. She's really sweet." Care and Share is a people agency, and it isn't meant to handle animals, Lindemann said. The Humane Society of Ottawa County is really the place where pet owners should take dogs and cats they can't keep, she said. She has grown concerned because this is the second pet-dumping incident at the drop box, she said. A few years ago, someone left some kittens there. In both cases, Lindemann was glad she could find people to adopt the animals.
