Hoarding 90 cats, 6 dogs
Omaha, NE (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Feb 6, 2003
County: Douglas

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Carmen K Wade

An anonymous tip led animal control officials to an Omaha house packed with 96 animals Thursday.  Humane Society workers said conditions inside the house were unsanitary for the pets and for humans. Two children were also removed from the house at 2720 Laurel Ave.

Workers had a search warrant to enter the house and confiscated 90 cats and six dogs.

"Thirty of the cats were kept in kennels, cages around the living room area, as well as the dogs. But as you turn the corner, there's a bathroom -- 10-by-4-by-11," Humane Society worker Darcy Beck said.

Workers found close to 60 cats inside the bathroom. They said many were dehydrated and starving.  Humane workers said four of the cats had severe health problems and had to be euthanized. They're hoping the remaining animals can be adopted. They're being housed at the Humane Society shelter at 89th and Fort.

Police took two children, an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, from the home and placed them in temporary foster care. The children's mother was charged with child abuse. Humane workers said animal waste was everywhere inside the home.
