An unidentified person in an older model blue Chevrolet or Buick sedan threw a garbage bag containing five American Eskimo puppies out of their passenger window about 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. The incident occurred near the Seventh North Street exit in Salina. Someone on the driver's side threw out the mother of the puppies right after throwing out the bag of puppies.
Two of the puppies died and their mother was severely injured.
The garbage bag containing the puppies hit a car's windshield and broke open. Three white puppies fell out onto the vehicle and into the roadway as the two vehicles traveled north on I-81. The woman driving the car said, "At first I thought it was a baby. All I could see was a pink and white body. I pulled over and saw they were pups .. One puppy was yelping and crying." A pick up truck traveling behind the woman's car ran over the mother dog.
The man in the pickup stopped his truck near the woman's stopped car. He ran into the highway to get the mother dog which was badly injured, two puppies that were killed and two of the surviving puppies. The man said he was going to get medical attention for the dogs and drove away.
The police have not been able to identify the man.
One puppy landed on the side of the Interstate, she took the dog home and called the police.
State Police Sgt Nick Harmatiuk of the North Syracuse barracks said the suspects could face felony cruelty to animals charges. The troopers are asking for help in identifying the suspects who threw the puppies and dog out of the moving car.
The troopers are also looking for the man who removed the injured mother dog and puppies from the scene of the accident. They would like to know the condition of the dog and puppies, and if he can help identify the suspects and their car.
The male puppy a woman took home had some scrapes and has recovered. They have decided to name him "Lucky."
