Two dogs shot, woman arrested
Salt Lake City, UT (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, May 9, 2000
County: Salt Lake

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Name Undisclosed

An unidentified 40 year old Salt Lake woman has been charged in 3rd District Court with two counts of aggravated cruelty to an animal, a class A misdemeanor, for allegedly shooting a chow and pit bull in her backyard while intoxicated.

A family argument resulted with the two dogs being shot in the backyard.

The police report states the mother became upset when her daughter announced she was going to move out of state with her husband and four children.

The mother told her daughter, "I'm going to make sure your kids are taken from you," then threw a candle and two plants at her daughter before grabbing a gun.

The daughter's husband said he saw the mother in the backyard shoot the family's pit bull once. Then she shot the second dog a chow. Police located the 9mm handgun in the defendant's room.

The pit bull and the chow had to be euthanized because the daugher could not pay the $1,500 it would cost to operate on the wounds.

If the woman is convicted of shooting the two dogs she could face a fine of $2,500 and up to a year in prison for each count of animal cruelty. The defendant has also been charged with discharging a firearm, a class B misdemeanor; carrying a weapon while under the influence, a class B misdemeanor; and assault, a class B misdemeanor.
