more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Case #7283 Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Dogs stolen, results in 1 death
Fenton, MI (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Jun 15, 2005
County: Genesee

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Cassandra Mae McCarthy

Cassandra Mae McCarthy, 36, of Fenton, was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Geoffrey L. Neithercut on Aug. 11 to 180 days in jail for receiving and concealing stolen Chihuahuas in June 2005. McCarthy must also serve 93 days in jail for cruelty to animals.

The Fenton Police Department responded to a tip on June 15, 2005, that seven Chihuahuas stolen from a Davison Township woman the week before were in McCarthy's Carnes Street home. Officers were dispatched to the home and made contact with McCarthy and removed all seven dogs from the home. One of the Chihuahuas died shortly thereafter. Fenton police contacted the Davison Township woman who reported the dogs stolen and she came out and identified her dogs, according to Police Chief Rick Aro. Police obtained a warrant for McCarthy's arrest and she was charged with receiving and concealing stolen property, which is a felony and cruelty to animals, which is a misdemeanor.

While Fenton police officers were at the home, they observed several ordinance violations, including too many pets/animals at the residence. The Fenton ordinance officer was called in and the ordinance violations were brought to McCarthy's attention and she was given a notice to get rid of some of the animals.
