A spate of cat poisonings in the Cookstown area involving anti-freeze could have been accidental but deliberate cruelty is not being ruled out at this stage, according to police. "Cats like the taste of anti-freeze and will lap it up whenever they get it", said a police spokesman.

Cookstown vet Clare Brankin, whose Craemill practice treated three of the poisoned cats, said: "The key compound in anti-freeze is ethylene glycol which is both sweet and syrupy and attractive to both cats and dogs alike. "Just a teaspoonful of the liquid can be lethal for a nine-pound cat but often an animal will drink much more than the lethal dose," said Clare. "It can be up to 24 to 48 hours before an animal will show any symptoms but that will be too late for a vet to save it." But she added: "A pet can survive such poisoning if given expert veterinary treatment within four to eight hours of swallowing the fluid."
