A pet rabbit has been beaten to death in Ulster's latest episode of cruelty to animals. Police are investigating the attack which occurred in Ardglass. It is believed that an ornamental swan may have been used to beat the rabbit to death. The animal was found dead between 3pm and 6pm on January 6, 2006, but details of the incident only emerged last night.

A police spokesman said the pet white rabbit was found dead in the front garden of a house in The Ward in Ardglass. He said: "Veterinary examination established that the rabbit had suffered a blunt head trauma. "An ornamental swan was found lying in the garden and one theory is that it was swung and used to hit the rabbit. "The neck of the ornamental swan broke off, such was the force that may have been used. "Initially it was thought that a dog may have attacked it, but the injuries were found not to be consistent with a dog attack."

Police want to speak to two youths who were seen in the area shortly before the rabbit was discovered lying dead. It is understood the rabbit had lived in the garden for the last two years.
