Authorities say a father punched his 13-year-old son in the face and beat him with a pool stick after he got in trouble at Lincoln Middle School in January 2006.
Manatee County sheriff's deputies arrested the father, Joel L. Rogers Sr., 43, on charges of child neglect and aggravated child abuse.
Authorities said the abuse, between Jan. 19 and Jan. 31, stemmed from the boy's bad grades. Investigators said the boy had a swollen hand, seven welts on the inside of his right arm and a 2-inch cut on top of his head.
Lincoln Middle teachers called authorities after the boy came to school Feb 2 with a black eye. Rogers told deputies that night that he didn't hurt his son. A judge set bail at $9,000. The sheriff's child protective services team has placed the boy in a foster home.
Authorities said that Rogers lost custody of his son in February 2001 for excessive corporal punishment. He was not charged with child abuse and eventually won back custody after completing a program.
Rogers was also arrested on an animal cruelty charge after authorities said they found an emaciated pit bull in his front yard.
The dog, deputies said, was "skin and bones."
