In January 2002, Douglas County Sheriff called the Nebraska Humane Society to Don Schmidt's property due to a structural fire where a dog was killed,  The Sheriff had concerns about the other domestic animals on the property as well.  The Nebraska Humane Society worked with the Douglas County Sheriff office and advised how they were being housed - they found 12 dogs and 20 cats.  According to reports, many of the cats had URI and the majority of cats and dogs were relinquished to the Nebraska Humane Society.  The animals had to be euthanized due to their poor condition.
