Deputies called to the scene of a fatal shooting also discovered dozens of people running an illegal cockfight, the Wilson County Sheriff's Department said.

Rosendo Torres Raygoza, 27, of Greenville died on Feb 5 after a man pulled a shotgun from under a long black coat and opened fire, authorities said. Witnesses reported that the men did not fight before the shooting, said sheriff's Maj. John Farmer.

Alejandro Rico Pineda of LaGrange was being sought a few days later on a murder charge.

James Ward Flowers, 56, of Sims, the owner of the property were the Raygoza died, was charged with illegal cockfighting, a felony in North Carolina. Officers found 40 to 50 birds when they arrived, along with a few dead birds and cockfighting paraphernalia such as metal spurs that are attached to the birds' legs to help them kill their opponents, Farmer said.

The birds had injuries consistent with cockfighting, Farmer said.

"They had all kinds of lacerations," he said. "They were bloody."

Flowers was released on $2,000 unsecured bond. Investigators were attempting to identify 40 to 60 people at the fight, Farmer said.

Authorities in Wilson have released a picture of the man they believe was involved in a deadly shooting over a cockfight. Investigators say Pineda shot Raygoza and fled the scene. Raygoza later died at the hospital.

Pineda was last seen in a brown-and-silver 1990s-model Dodge Ram extended cab pickup truck with tinted windows.
