John Applegarth, supervisor of the citys animal control department, said an investigation into three cat mutilations was ongoing.

The cats were all reported to Animal Care Central on Jan. 31. Dr. Brian Dougherty, the clinics veterinarian, said he saw two of the animals and referred a third to the Animal Emergency Center in Tulsa.

Applegarth said he has interviewed those people who found the first two cats and wants to find the person who took the third animal to the Tulsa clinic.

Dougherty said last week he was treated the second of the two cats when his office received a phone call about the third and made the referral.

Applegarth said he wants to speak with the person who called Doughertys office and received the referral. The person did not leave his or her name with Dougherty, Applegarth said.

On Jan. 31, a man working on the Turner Turnpike bridge construction at Frankoma Road brought an injured white cat to Animal Care Central. The cat was missing both hind legs.

At the time Dougherty believed the cat had been hit by a car or had been attacked by another animal. But when Rodger Canady brought his Siamese cat Bandit to Dougherty later the same day, Dougherty said he became suspicious because the injuries were identical.

One of Bandits front legs had been partially amputated at the elbow and one back leg was greatly swollen, Dougherty said. An X-ray revealed numerous pieces of buckshot had been shot into the cat.

Dougherty said thats when he knew the cat had been maliciously attacked.

The third cat referred to Doughertys office was described as suffering the same injuries as the first two animals.

Dougherty said his office reported the first cat to the sheriffs department since it had been discovered outside city limits. Canady reported the attack on his pet to the Sapulpa Police Department.

Applegarth said he checked with the police department for calls about gunshots that may have been heard Jan. 30-31, but none had been reported to police.

Cynthia Armstrong, of the Oklahoma chapter of the Humane Society of the United States, said a reward would be offered in the case.
