Last weekend, someone shot another horse in Eastern Iowa. It's the third animal in a month. The first incident happened in Dubuque on the day after Christmas 2005. "My 12 year old son, he doesn't like to come down here anymore because it was his horse that was shot," says horse owner Jeff Dix.

In mid-January, someone shot another horse near Maquoketa. The Jackson County Sheriff says the this shooting appears to be an accident and is probably not related to the other shooting. He says the bullet that hit the horse in Jackson County may have ricocheted off something else. Dix says he's positive that didn't happen in his case. "If it's an accident ya hit something or it ricochets or whatever that's one thing, but when you go out and you hit a horse twice, you were out to shoot and kill the horse," says Dix.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Office says it does get calls about people shooting their guns in the country, but not at people's pets. "It's a fairly rare occurrences. We don't have, we seldom have any reports of this type of activity taking place," says Sheriff's Office Captain Gregory Egan. Both shootings are under investigation, but the horse owners say finding out who pulled the trigger won't bring back what's lost. "Personally I don't know if I want to know, it's upsetting. I'm at the point now that I really don't want to know because I don't know what I'd say to the person. I just can't figure out why somebody would do it," says Dix.

If you have any information about either of the two horse shootings, you are encouraged to call the Dubuque/Jo Daviess counties Crimes Stoppers at 1(800) 747-0117. There is a $3,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Dubuque horse shooting.
