They say he's lucky to be alive. A two year old dog was found January 23, 2006 partially buried in a trench in Amherst County. Rescuers had to dig him out and now he's recovering at an animal hospital. And it turns out the dog had also been shot. He's gaining some strength and doing remarkably well, considering all he's been through. The veterinarian says its a common saying with cats, but he really thinks this dog has nine lives.
He was found trapped and covered with mud in an 8 inch trench. The vet thinks he was there a couple of days and may have fallen in the hole after getting hit by a car. After an x-ray, the Doctor discovered he's also been shot by a shotgun. He still has about 30 buckshot in his body. Dr. Duncan Augustine, Veterinarian - "It's a miracle that he is still living from his ordeal in the ditch, his temperature had fallen to 95, that's in the process of dying."
The dog, now nicknamed Mud by the medical staff, is expected to make a full recovery. And in just a few days he'll be put up for adoption.
