Cat thrown from second-story window
Woonsocket, RI (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 8, 2006
County: Providence

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» 9 year old boy
» 15 year old boy

Two young brothers -- age 9 and 15 -- who police say killed their cat after throwing it out of a second-story window on Lincoln Street, were arrested for animal cruelty on Feb 8, 2006.

A next-door neighbor who witnessed the alleged killing reported it to police around 5 p.m. She told police she believed the animal had died.

Police responded to the boys' apartment where they met the mother, who confirmed her sons were inside.

Two other neighbors told police that earlier they saw the boys laughing and screaming outside while they took turns throwing the cat on the ground.

The two neighbors told the boys to stop and that the police were coming. The pair then ran back to the apartment with the cat.

The boys' mother said she had no knowledge of the animal's death and said she had been apparently napping when the alleged killing occurred.

Her sons, she told police, were supposed to be inside playing video games while she slept. Police asked the boys where the animal was, and the 15-year-old said he didn't know. After the mother questioned her sons, the 15-year-old said the younger brother "got rid of it," according to a police officer's written statement.

The two brothers had taken in the stray cat, the mother said, but when they mistreated the animal, she told them to put it back outside.

The mother told police that she was having trouble controlling her sons, and the 9-year-old had just been released from a group home and the 15-year-old was living with a grandparent until recently. The mother said she had two younger children in the home.

Police reported they found the body of the cat behind the apartment building.
