In February 2005, animal rescuers found 80 goats dead and removed 200 more from a Portage County farm, where they apparently were being largely ignored by their owner. Officials called this one of the biggest cases of animal abuse in the state's history, and the goats were handed over to the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Now, a year later, 65 of those goats still need homes.
The arena where the animals have been kept has been sold, and the Ohio SPCA is trying desperately to find homes for the animals. They also say that anyone can help. You don't need to have a farm to own a goat, but you do have to get them approved. Maggie Godfrey, a SPCA volunteer, said goats make great pets and are not aggressive. "It's best to have two or three of them together since they have bonded so close. A quarter of an acre is enough for two or three goats," said Godfrey.
To learn more about adopting any of the animals, call the Ohio SPCA at (614) 875-1810, or visit the SPCA's Web site.
