An unleashed dog was shot and killed by a Cold Springs Road resident in Placerville after the dog reportedly threatened the man and his 5 year old daughter, according to a report filed by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

Another man was reportedly walking his two Labradors, one black and one yellow, on a path near a mobile home park, when the dogs, both unleashed, ran ahead of him. After hearing shots fired, the owner of the dogs ran down a hill to find a juvenile girl and a man armed with a .22 caliber rifle, the report adds. He discovered his black dog injured and yelping and asked the armed man if he had shot h is dog. The man responded that he had, according to the report.

When Sheriff's Deputies arrived, the man who had reportedly shot the dog told them that the dog had gone under a fence, had entered his property, taken an aggressive stance, and that he had feared for the safety of himself and his daughter. He also told them that he had problems with skunks, and that he was carrying the rifle because he and his daughter were on a 'skunk hunt', the report adds.

The black labrador was shot twice, once in the head, and did not survive. Neither men were arrested or cited and the case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for examination.
