Benton County deputies arrested a man suspected of shooting two dogs killing one and injuring the other. John David Reed, 27, was being held Feb 1 in the Benton County Jail on a charge of animal cruelty and a contempt-of-court warrant from Bentonville District Court, according to Doug Gay, public information deputy for the Benton County Sheriffs Office.

Reed was arrested at 8 p.m. on Jan 31 after deputies received a report from Stephanie Sturges at 13648 Rocky Dell Hollow Road that two her dogs had been shot.

Three dogs were in a yard, and Reed apparently shot two of the animals, Gay said.

The third dog was unharmed, according to Gay. "He unloaded a shotgun on them," Gay said. "He killed one and maimed the other one."

The wounded dog had to have its leg amputated, Gay said.

The incident occurred on Rocky Dell Hollow Road, east of Gravette. Gay did not know whether Reed owns or lives at the location because the BCSO had listed a Bentonville address as his residence.

Reed told deputies he had complained about dogs getting into the garbage, Gay said.

The law does not allow people to shoot animals that get into their garbage, according to Gay.

The dogs were not being vicious to another person or creating a problem with livestock, Gay said.

Animal cruelty is a class A misdemeanor and punishable with a sentence of up to a year in jail, a fine up to $1,000 or both.
