Officials seized 51 cats on Jan 30 from a single-wide manufactured home in a case they described as one of the worst incidents of animal hoarding they had ever seen.

Feces and urine blanketed the home in the 1200 block of 24th Street, said Ilka Daniel, director of Outreach Services at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County. Investigators had to wear hazardous material suits during the nine-hour-long raid after health department officials determined the home had unsafe levels of ammonia.

The homeowners, whose names were not released, have not been arrested as of Tuesday morning but are being investigated, she said. Each cat was removed from the home Monday and immediately taken to a veterinarian. All have been given medicine for ear mites and Humane Society workers today have started the process of cleaning the cats and nursing them back to health, Daniel said.

Officials did not know when or if the cats would be put up for adoption.
