The USPCA has slammed the neglect which left a seriously ill greyhound fighting for its life.

The animal was picked up by the charity in north Belfast on the morning of January 18, 2006 and was found to be suffering from extensive injuries to three of its legs and head. It was found in the York Road/Limestone area.

A spokesman for the charity said: "There are literally lumps of flesh missing from the animals legs, but it must be quite a young animal as the vet thought it had a chance of surviving. He is giving it 48 hours to see how it goes, but it doesn't look good. If it had been an older dog it would probably have been put down. "It is thought it was involved in a road accident and the owner has just left it to try and heal itself. It's just a bag of bones and the wounds have been left to fester for weeks. "Somebody somewhere must know what happened to this animal and who owns it. Our officer believes it was a family pet, but the treatment it was subject to was abhorrent."

The spokesman said nobody in the area knew who the dog belonged to.

"This was a serious case of criminal neglect, but nothing would surprise us any longer in this job," he said.

When seen by the News Letter, the animal was lying on a quilt in a kennel and did not even have the strength to lift its head.

The spokesman added: "Why let a dog get to death's door like this, we would have been glad to look at it earlier."
