Three pigs were beaten to death with a broken shovel, and six others received cuts and broken legs sometime between the night of Jan 21 the morning of Jan 22 when someone broke into the Nocona school district's ag barn, said Nocona High School FFA adviser Mike Shipman.
He said several of the pigs were to be sold at market a few days later.
Shipman said the students were planning to show the pigs at the Houston Livestock Show, and some of the animals could have fetched $800 or more at the event. He said the meat alone was worth $400 to $500. He said one pig that survived is still scheduled to go to Houston.
Shipman also said he didn't believe anyone was retaliating against FFA members but that it was a cruel joke, the Wichita Falls Times Record News reported.
Nocona Police Chief Kent Holcomb said the crime is not considered animal cruelty because the statue excludes cattle, horses, sheep, swine or goats. But Holcomb said perpetrators could be charged with criminal mischief Case UpdatesA second suspect in the Nocona FFA pig killings has turned himself in. Nocona Police say 20-year-old Ohernandez Delayo turned himself in at the Montague County Jail early this morning after eluding investigators for almost a week. They believe Delayo and 18-year-old Mitch Atteberry broke into the Nocona FFA barn on January 21st and beat several pigs with a shovel before running them over. Delayo also faces burglary and criminal mischief charges. | Source: KFDX - Feb 6, 2006 Update posted on Feb 10, 2006 - 7:45PM |
