County: ChesterfieldDisposition: Not Charged
Person of Interest: Holiday Barn Pet Resort
A Powhatan County man wants answers after he says his dog died within 24 hours of being groomed.
"Jim," who didn't want his last name used, says the Holiday Barn Pet Resort in Midlothian is responsible for "Blitz's" death in early December. At that time, Jim's wife took the 10-year old miniature schnauzer in for his regular grooming. Hours later, Jim says "Blitz" was lethargic and had trouble breathing. They took him to his long-time vet who prescribed antibiotics for possible infection. The next night, Jim says "Blitz" died in his arms.
A necropsy by Powhatan Animal Hospital showed the dog died from a condition that caused difficulty in breathing, and had suffered severe trauma to his throat and rib cage.
"There could be no doubt about it, he was hung he had injuries to his ribs; he had lots of other injuries inconsistent with routine grooming," Jim said.
The attorney for the owner of Holiday Barn released this statement: "Each of us at Holiday Barn is a pet lover who sympathizes with the (family's) understandable distress at the loss of their beloved dog. After our thorough investigation, we know with confidence that we did not cause this pet's death. All of us extend to the (family) our deepest personal sympathy on their loss."
Chesterfield's Animal Control is investigating "Blitz's" death.
