Dog found with severe gash on back
Saugus, MA (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jan 5, 2006
County: Essex

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Police in Massachusetts are trying to determine what caused the massive gash in a golden retriever found living the woods, possibly for a month. While cautioning against jumping to conclusions, police and the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are investigating the incident, as well as a string of dead or injured golden retrievers found in late 2004 throughout the state. The causes of those incidents are still unsolved.

In the latest case, Saugus, Mass., police say the dog is resting in a warm place and healing from a 2-inch-wide, 13-inch-long cut in on its back, The Boston Globe reports. Canine Control Officer Harold Young said the female dog found on January 5, 2006 is about 7 years old and probably survived on her own -- through the cold weather and predators such as coyotes -- in a patch of woods behind Route 1. It was caught in a trap set earlier this week. No owner has been identified. Scott Giacoppo, a spokesman for the MSPCA, said it will be hard to tell if the deep gash is from a knife, another animal or possibly the result of trying to crawl under a fence. He also said without witnesses, animal cruelty cases are hard to solve.
