An Encinitas animal rights group offered a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of whoever slaughtered a prize steer last weekend at Escondido High School.

San Diego Animal Advocates also is asking school officials to end their 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs, said Jane Cartmill, group spokeswoman.

"This is at least the third incident in the past few years in which animals have been injured or killed at Escondido High School," Cartmill said. "If they can't provide for the animals' security, they shouldn't have them out there."

Black Jack, an 8-month-old Angus Cross steer, was sliced into several pieces. The killers took his front quarters.

A pig was killed with an arrow and other pigs were poked or whipped during a 2001 incident at the school.

A school representative couldn't be reached for comment, but Wayne Dozier, agricultural instructor, said after Black Jack's slaying that school officials may consider tighter security measures.
