A Comer woman has been charged with animal cruelty after a state Department of Agriculture investigation. The Madison County Sheriff's Department arrested the woman, Andrea Dawn Jones, 33, Jan. 17.

Jones, of 115 Quaggin Drive, Comer, was charged with five counts of cruelty to animals.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department referred the investigation to the agriculture department after hearing reports that five horses in the woman's care were in declining health because of inadequate care, said Madison County Chief Deputy Bill Strickland.

Agriculture officials removed the horses from the woman's care, Strickland said.
