Investigators found more than two dozen dogs in bad health and the carcasses of three more in the home of a woman who investigators described as mentally ill. The stench of animal feces in the home was so strong that Colbert County animal control officers used masks when they entered, said animal control director Tommy Morson.

The woman, whose name was not released, was admitted for psychiatric evaluation and would not be charged with animal cruelty. The 25 dogs, which were malnourished and had mange, were being euthanized Monday because of their condition, Morson said. He said most of the animals did not have fur.
