Pottawattamie County officials are looking for a man they believe beat a dog so badly the animal had to be put down.

It's one of the worst animal abuse cases that Pottawattamie County officials say they have ever seen. Officials said it started as an argument between a woman and her boyfriend, and ended with the death of the woman's dog.

Rebecca Fender lives next door to the woman, Jaylnn Dinville. Fender said Dinville's 2-year-old pit bull, Tyson, was a nice dog.

"He was playful. Hyper. But he wouldn't attack somebody," Fender said.

Early on the morning of Jan 19, police responded to a call in Council Bluffs. Reports show Aaron Anderson got into an argument with Dinville and threatened to kill her dog. When police arrived, Anderson had already left.

Officers said they recommended that Dinville leave and take the dog in case Anderson returned. She left, but couldn't take Tyson at the time.

A couple of hours later, Dinville return to find Tyson near death.

"This dog went through a very brutal ordeal," said the county's chief animal control officer Galen Barret.

Barret said the dog was still alive, but gravely injured when Dinville got home.

"He had multiple fractures in the jaw line, multiple fractures on both sides of his head. You can see the burst blood vessel in his right eye," Barret said.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Anderson. If he is charged and convicted with animal abuse, he faces a maximum of two years in jail and/or a $5,000 fine.

Case Updates

A man convicted of beating his girlfriend's dog is going to jail. Aaron Anderson was sentenced Friday morning in Council Bluffs to six months in jail.

Anderson was convicted in August on two counts: animal abuse and animal torture.

In January, Anderson severely beat and paralyzed Tyson, his girlfriend's two-and-a-half-year-old pit bull. Animal control officers had to euthanize the dog.

Galen Barrett, Iowa's chief animal control officer says, "How anyone can, could allow themselves or bring themselves to do something like that definitely has some issues that need to be addressed."

Prosecutors asked for the maximum sentence of four years however a judge suspended all but six months for Anderson.

Prosecutor Christine Shockey says, "I felt very strongly that the penalty I asked for was appropriate but we will live with what the judge sentenced."

Meanwhile, Galen Barrett says he'll always live with what upsets him the most.

"The torture," he says. "The beating that this dog had to endure throughout the process of the crime."
