Disposition: Open
Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
An Ironton police officer and some neighborhood children rescued a puppy from the sewer in the vicinity of Ninth and Madison streets on the evening of Jan 17. Now, authorities want to find who is responsible for this.
Ironton Police Sgt. Beth Rist said she was called to the area by children who had heard the puppy whining. Rist said there is no way the pup landed in the sewer accidentally.
"This is plain animal cruelty," Rist said. "They must have thought they'd put him down there and he would drown. When we got him, he was struggling. I don't understand, why didn't they just take him to the pound? If we find out who did this they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."
The dog was first taken to the home of Ironton Dog Warden George Wilson and later the home of Lawrence County Humane Society officer Alberta Wise, who pointed out this is not the first time the sewer has been used as an unwanted animal disposal.
"We had a cat in the sewer last year. It was about dead when we got it," she said. "I don't know how some people can be so cruel."
She estimated the pup to be 8 weeks old and said she believes he may be a full-stock black Labrador retriever.
The pup will put the dog up for adoption on the Ironton Humane Society's website.
Anyone with information about the pup is encouraged to call Rist at the police station, (740) 532-2338. If you have information on this case, please contact: Ironton Police Sgt. Beth Rist (740) 532-2338
