A St. Helena Island man was charged in connection with the mistreatment of eight dogs, officials said. James D. Berry, 35, was charged with animal cruelty. Berry was charged after eight dogs were found in various states of starvation on St. Helena Island, said Beaufort County spokesman Pete Nardi.

One of the dogs was dead, Nardi said, when animal control officers found them. He said an autopsy on the dog showed the cause of death as starvation.

The seven surviving dogs are being housed in the animal shelter to be nourished back to health while the incident is investigated, Nardi said.
