A dog is recovering at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society after someone left her there, tied to a fence in freezing rain on January 17, 2006. "We think she's about 4 or 5 years old. She's obviously a terrier mix, and very, very scared, very thin," said Jacque Meyer, executive director at the humane society. Employees at the humane society are calling the dog "Ruby."
Cruelty investigators said whoever left the dog may face criminal charges. "When you drop an animal on the front porch of somebody's house or at our property and just leave it outside overnight, you better believer we're going to go after it if we can," said cruelty investigator Marty Patock.
The dog was found tied to a gate down the street from the humane society on nothing but a string and a ragged collar. It was left there on the hard pavement in cold, rainy weather. "She couldn't move there's no body fat on her and she was freezing. It was a very cold morning this morning and she couldn't sit. All she could do was stand," Meyer said. Birmingham's humane society is open seven days a week. Employees said the owner could have surrendered the dog when they were open and not abandon it in the freezing weather. The case also brings a reminder for pet owners that this year's unusual winter weather can be a hidden danger for animals. "These animals don't have their winter coats, they haven't prepared for it. Their coats fill in according to the temperature," Meyer said. That means cool nights and rainy weather leave pets more vulnerable to cold this year.
