United States Humane Society officials on January 18, 2006 accused owners of a Panhandle pig farm of cruelly beating young swine and leaving them to die slowly, a letter to the farm said. The society accused employees of Texas Farms Inc. in Ochiltree County of regularly practicing "a particularly cruel and barbaric method" of thumping, where baby pigs are beaten against the floor until they die.

At Texas Farms, the letter states, sick, injured and unwanted baby pigs are slammed against a concrete floor until they bleed from the nose and are immobile, the letter states. They are then left to die "a painful and slow death," according to what people familiar with the farm operation told humane society officials, the letter said. Texas Farm spokesman Corby Barrett in Perryton declined to comment. The letter alleges that thumping has gone on for years at the farm.

"Not only is this egregious animal abuse, but it is possibly a crime," Peter Wood, deputy director of cruelty issues for the society, wrote to Texas Farms Inc. "The torture of any animal, including a pig, is a felony in Texas." Texas penal code states that torture of an animal is a state jail felony, the lowest felony classification.
