Jamie Lee Sumlin, 17, of Cedartown and Joshua Wayne Haslacker, 18, of Rome were both charged with aggravated animal cruelty. The two are accused of taking a ninja-style sword and cutting the dog in the face and neck on Nov. 8, 2004 arrest warrants stated. Both Sumlin and Haslacker were later released on $2,100 bond each.

The suspects claimed that they were attempting to kill the dog because it was suffering from the mange. Jeff Crawford, an officer with Polk County Animal Control, stated that the dog survived and has been taken to an area animal shelter for further treatment.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling for the vigorous prosecution of two teens charged with animal cruelty in November. The group sent a letter to Assistant District Attorney David Gafnea, who said the case has not reached his office yet.
We will do what is right, just and appropriate according to the laws of the State of Georgia, which mandates how the district attorneys office handles its cases, he said. "When it comes to cases involving cruelty to animals, we deal with it in an appropriate manner but will not be swayed by special interest groups with no special interest in the case, Gafnea said.
