A Co Down man has been caught on camera selling illegal and dangerous dogs. Convicted hijacker, fraudster and burglar Gary 'Skivvy' McGivern, from Newry, has been selling banned American pit-bull terriers.

An undercover Sunday Life reporter - posing as an illegal dog-fight organiser from England - purchased a pup from the criminal after he placed an advert in a local shop window. We met McGivern - who also placed an advert in a local newspaper - at his home last week and paid 80 for the six-week-old dog. McGivern's advert claimed the pup was seven weeks old - but a USPCA vet told us it was only six weeks. The Newry thug did not ask for identification, and when asked if the dog was suitable for fighting, he boasted: "It will be a champion - his dad was a champion, too." He even boasted that the pup's father was the pit-bull that brutally mauled a 10-year-old girl in Warrenpoint, Co Down, just days before Christmas. And he told us the pup's father also savaged a Rottweiler during its training for fighting.

After leaving McGivern's home, we immediately handed the animal over to the USPCA shelter in Carryduff. Although a USPCA vet told us the dog was healthy, he confirmed it was one of the growing number of American pit-bulls in Northern Ireland. The vet also confirmed the dog was illegal because it had not been neutered, micro-chipped, insured or muzzled.
