A Floyd County woman has been forced to give up all but six of the 45 cats she kept in a trailer several miles from her home.
Betty Russell of Cave Spring was ordered to sign over the pets to Floyd County Animal Control on April 8, 2004 after Magistrate Judge Glenda Caldwell found her guilty of 45 counts of cruelty to animals and other violations.
Despite Russell's impassioned pleas, Caldwell ruled that only six cats could be returned, and just three could stay in the trailer - after it had been thoroughly cleaned and inspected by county officials. Forty of the cats were removed by animal control March 25, 2004. The other five were left in the trailer because they were ''too wild'' to capture, Animal Control Director Scotty Hancock said. He said 34 of the felines probably would be euthanized because of illness and malnourishment. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
