Wildlife officers are investigating the crossbow shooting of a kangaroo. CALM volunteers were forced to destroy the adult western grey kangaroo after the distressed animal was spotted in a Joondalup park with an arrow lodged in its chest.

Mr Hunter said kangaroos were a protected species and anyone caught illegally injuring them faced a fine of up to $50,000 under the Animal Welfare Act. "It would have been in a lot of pain," he said. "For someone to have shot it and leave it in that state is particularly callous."

Emma-Jane Morcombe, from the RSPCA, appealed for anyone with information to contact the society or CALM.
