A dog rotting on the back porch, no food or water in sight. Another dead dog chained to a tree. That was the situation at an Archer home, where Alachua County Animal Service workers picked up two dead dogs.

An anonymous phone call led animal control workers to 17511 SW 183rd Avenue in Archer, where they found a pit bull dead for about 10 days. His stomach was bloated, his skin rotting off, and mature maggots feasting on his remains. "The animals were decomposing and appeared not to have any water or food," says Lyn Santerfeit of Animal Services. And yet another pit bull, dead for about 48 hours. This one is about one year old, lying in filth, flies swarming around it's body. It was a sight to behold, even for the professionals. "I've been employed here for five years and you never get used to it," said Santerfeit.

Rodgers says she's not surprised about finding the dead dogs on this property. Animal control workers say they impounded five dogs from this home in 2003. It is not clear who owns the dead pit bulls.

Animal service workers say the last person to receive mail to 17511 Southwest 183rd Avenue was James Scott, Jr. If indeed Scott is the owner of the dogs, he faces a hefty charge. A sworn complaint was filed with the State Attorney's office today for a third degree felony. On first conviction that means up to a $5,000 fine plus up to five years in prison.
