A alleged cockfight in a northern suburbs property has been raided by police and the RSPCA is pushing for tougher penalties for the "cruel and bloodthirsty" crime. Police arrived at the scene of the alleged fight, at a Tozer Rd, Waterloo Corner property, around 12.30am on January 12, 2006. "They disturbed what appeared to be an illegal cockfight in progress," said Senior Sergeant John Davey, of Elizabeth police. RSPCA officers attended and seized 12 birds, one with two sharp metal spurs attached to a leg. Police seized metal spurs and other equipment.

Five men aged 18-34 were arrested and charged with illegal treatment of an animal. A 34-year-old man was also charged with keeping an animal for use in a fighting event and possessing cockfighting spurs. Eight people, including two juveniles, were reported. RSPCA spokeswoman Emily Vatkovic said: "We understand it's a cultural event, but it is illegal in Australia and it is cruel and blood-thirsty." She said the RSPCA had made a submission to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act review for "much heftier penalties for cruelty and mistreatment of animals".

The maximum penalty for organizing a cockfight is $10,000 or a year in jail, while being in possession of an animal for the purpose of fighting carries a $1250 fine.

Case Updates

The Elizabeth Magistrates Court in Adelaide has heard that police raided the same northern suburbs property twice in two months over an illegal cockfighting racket.

Trung Van Phan, 35, pleaded guilty on February 21 to ill treating an animal and being in possession of 12 fighting roosters.

Police charged 13 men after a midnight raid of Phan's Waterloo Corner property in Jan 2005.

Phan denied that the roosters were his, as did all the other men found at the cockfight.

Prosecutors said Phan's brother was fined $2,000 for hosting cockfighting at the same property late last year.

Magistrate Peter Millard also fined Phan $2,000 as well as ordering him to pay court costs and $800 to the RSPCA for taking care of the roosters.
