A Johnson County judge has convicted a Vienna woman who threw four kittens from a moving vehicle. Judge James Williamson convicted Nora J. Knack, 64, Friday on two counts each of aggravated cruelty to animals and cruel treatment to animals.

Knack was accused of throwing the kittens onto the pavement of Illinois Routes 147 and 146 on May 31.

A witness traveling behind Knack's car saw Knack throwing live kittens out of the window of her car. The witness copied down Knack's license plate and narrowly missed running over one of the kittens thrown from Knack's vehicle. One of the four kittens survived the toss onto the pavement. However, the surviving kitten bit its rescuer, and had to be destroyed for rabies testing.

At the bench trial, which lasted in excess of three hours, McIntyre stated that a fifth kitten was found dead on Illinois 146 in front of a Vienna city park, but because no witness could associate Knack with the dead kitten, she was not charged with its death.
