The recent rescue of two horses destined to die in the mountains near Clinton shows just how far those in the field of animal protection will go to stop cruelty and neglect.

Kent Kokoska, a Kamloops-based investigations officer with the B.C. SPCA, made two trips to the remote site up a logging road, hired a hauler to bring the horses down to safety, and arranged for their shelter at a location near Kamloops, where theyre being looked after by a caretaker and veterinarian. First a little shook up by the rescue, the mares are now peaceful, with plenty of feed to fatten them up. The ribs are easily distinguished. On the rest of the body, there are hollows where there should be flesh, and the bones around the neck and hips protrude like deep ridges. According to a rating measure used by Kokoska, on a scale of one to nine, these horses are a one: extremely emaciated, not an ounce of fat anywhere. The vet says these are the worst shes ever seen, said Kokoska.

The senior animal protection officer cant comment on his investigation, but said he deals with dozens of horse neglect cases a year.

Meanwhile, anyone interested in assisting with costs associated with the care of the newly rescued horses, or in possible adoption, can contact Kokoska at 828-6751.
