Dog shot by neighbor
Galliano, LA (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Jan 10, 2006
County: Lafourche

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Duane J Lloyd

A 74-year-old South Lafourche man with a habit of shooting at his neighbors dog when the animal does its business on his lawn hit the animal and was arrested January 11, 2006, according to a Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office report.

Duane J. Lloyd was charged with animal cruelty after deputies arrived at West 107th Street in Galliano and found Lloyds neighbor holding a small terrier that was bleeding from what appeared to be a gunshot wound to one of its rear legs, according to the report. Gil Mousseau, the dogs owner, said he was outside feeding his dogs when he heard the shot. I saw the guy sneaking in the house with a rifle and I looked down and saw my little baby dog licking its foot, he said. I thought, 'This cannot be. I was shocked.

Mousseau added that the terrier, named Butterscotch, will be fine.

Lloyd, of 360 W. 107th St., said this morning that he normally shoots behind the dog three or four times a week with a .22-caliber target rifle when the creature walks onto his property to crap in his yard. I had no intention of harming it, I only wanted to scare him back home, Lloyd said. Every day he comes in the backyard and has a place where he wants to do his job.

Lloyd said this incident was no different, except that the dog jumped when it caught sight of him.
I got careless and I hit it, said Lloyd, who has three cats and claimed he has asked his neighbors repeatedly to control their pets. Its such a nuisance. They dont do anything to train their dogs, he said.
Mousseau said Butterscotch and his other two dogs are normally kept on a leash, but the terrier got loose that day. I have them all chained up , that was freak accident. This was a little dog, what harm could she do? he said. Mousseau said the most upsetting thing about the shooting was that his neighbor took the law into his own hands. Dont shoot the dog thats common sense, he said.

Lloyd said he and his wife are planning to soon move out of state because of troubles the couple has encountered in their neighborhood. He was arrested after the shooting and charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal. Lloyd was booked on the charge and released after posting $500 bond.
