Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents cited 41-year-old Michael Bladel of Pollock for allegedly killing a southern bald eagle.
Agents received a report December 21, 2005 that Bladel shot and killed an eagle the previous day. During the investigation, agents say Bladel admitted to shooting and killing the eagle, saying he thought he was shooting at a chicken hawk.
Agents seized talons, tail feathers and the discarded eagle from a trash bin and a .270 caliber rifle as evidence. Bladel then was cited for taking non-game bird for which there is no season, and the charge likely will be amended once filed in federal court.
Under the bald eagle protection law, Bladel could be fined 100-thousand dollars and put in prison for one year.
