A Saanich family made a gruesome discovery on December 24, 2005. Saanich police are investigating a case of animal cruelty after the owner of a Gordon Head home found two of his children?s pet rabbits had been killed and mutilated.

One of the rabbits had been decapitated and the head had been taken from the scene. The other pet appeared to have been severely beaten about the head, states the police report.
The bodies of both animals were left inside a hutch in the backyard.

The Humane Society of Canada announced that it is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the rabbit killers. The money will come from the society?s Victims of Cruelty program.

?It is deeply troubling that these acts of cruelty could take place to a family that is dealing with the loss of four rabbits stolen in September 2005,? Al Hickey, the society?s western regional director, said in a news release. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Saanich police at 475-4321 or Crimestoppers at 386-TIPS. The Humane Society can be reached at 1-800-641-5463 or by its website, www.humanesociety.com.
