Several dogs have been poisoned along an east valley canal recently, and it's now happened again. There have been about a dozen reports of strychnine poisonings in the last two months along a six-mile stretch of SRP's western canal, between Elliot and Guadalupe, from rural east to McQueen. The latest case happened in Tempe.

A family was walking their dog along the canal on Christmas Eve. Blackie is a nine- year-old Border Collie. He started having seizures and died within a couple hours. Now, family members want to warn others. "I will be telling everyone I see on this canal, since I go so often, to please keep your dog on a leash. I'll be telling everyone I know what happened out here," says dog owner Christie Bergstron.

Strychnine is commonly used for gopher bait, but we checked with city leaders and SRP and none of them have been using it to control rodents. Police are asking people to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior. Animal control says the best way to protect your pet is to keep it on a leash.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges. Charges referenced in the original case report may be modified throughout the course of the investigation or trial, so case updates, when available, should always be considered the most accurate reflection of charges.
