On the 17th of August 2004 ISPCA Dog Warden, Tim Merrill for the Co. Roscommon area, made a horrific discovery on his arrival to work. Four two-day-old puppies had been left to die the previous evening in a bucket, which with the terrible weather, had filled with water. Unfortunately it was too late for any treatment to be carried out and our veterinary surgeon advised us that it would be more humane to put them to sleep immediately as they had suffered far too much already.

The puppies, at two days old, would have required feeding from their mother every two hours. The owner would have realised that these poor creatures could not have possibly survived the night but had no regard for their welfare. In addition the mother of these puppies will now be left with no possibility of reducing the milk she had produced for her litter. This means that she may suffer severe mastitis along with other possible complications.

The ISPCA would appeal to the public for any information they might have on identifying the owner of this dog and also would appeal to the owner to bring the mother of these puppies for immediate veterinary attention. ISPCA Public Relations Officer, Niamh Delahunty said, "Cruelty of this nature is not acceptable and we would remind people that it is illegal to dump animals in this manner. Ms Delahunty also stated that this was a most horrific ordeal for these puppies and was completely unnecessary". While animal welfare societies cannot take into care every unwanted pet we will make every attempt to assist with re-homing and provide advice on neutering and veterinary treatments.
