Weld County Sheriff's deputies and animal control officers seized 16 roosters east of Gill in connection with possible cockfighting.

The deputies and officers executed a search warrant Friday at 32000 Weld County Road 57. Two or three suspects are being investigated, but no arrests have been made yet, said sheriff's spokeswoman Vicki Harbert.

The roosters were euthanized after they were seized, which is normal protocol, Harbert said.

Officers also seized many artificial spurs, animal vitamins and supplements, videotapes and other documents during the search.

Zoning compliance officers and animal control officers inspected the residence in November for zoning violations, including the number of animals at the property, Harbert said.

"Officers saw roosters in little pens," Harbert said. "They always keep them in their own separate pens (for cockfighting)."

Possible animal cruelty charges could turn into felonies if anyone charged is a repeat offender. The case is still under investigation, Harbert said.
