It was a disturbing discovery in a home on the citys West Side: 15 dogs were found living in terrible conditions in the South Austin neighborhood.
Officers from the Chicago Police Department arrived at a building at 20 N. Menard Street to conduct an investigation December 30, 2005. They found 15 dogs, mostly puppies, living in filthy conditions, covered in feces and urine. The dogs were beagles and pointers, apparently being raised for sale. The dogs were in six cages in the backyard of the building. Officers with the animal abuse control team arrested two men, who were apparently the owners of the dogs. The suspects may face a number of animal abuse charges and are in custody at the 15th District station. We responded. We found 15 dogs kept in makeshift kennels. The kennels were covered in mud, wet, said Sgt. Steve Brownstein.
A man who lives in the building and claims to be the father of one of the suspects said the dogs were kept in good condition, had tags and updated shots.
