A Christchurch youth who kicked a family of ducks has been censured by a judge and fined $750. Two ducklings died after Jared William Gibson repeatedly kicked them as they crossed a road. A third duckling was injured.

Gibson, 17, who admitted a charge of aggravated cruelty to an animal, was today fined $750 by Christchurch District Court Judge Colin Doherty, who described Gibson's actions as "mindless and cruel". Gibson had spent a weekend behind bars after being charged.

Sergeant Dave Robertson said Gibson saw a family of ducks crossing a road on October 30, 2005 and began kicking them, killing two ducklings and injuring a third. When a member of the public intervened, he ran off. Gibson accepted his behaviour was inexcusable. The judge said Gibson's guilty plea came late and only after about six court appearances on the same charge.
